How did you get into CrossFit?
I was into long distance running from 2007-2011. Within 2 months of completing the Louisville Marathon, I was having back surgery on ruptured discs. Post surgery the surgeon told me the change my focus to strength training to build up muscle to support my spine. I did P90X for about 6 months in my garage before my neighbor introduced me to this thing called “CrossFit.” I spent about a year following CF One World in California as they posted their WOD online and I just did my best on my own at Bob’s gym.
How long have you been doing CrossFit and been a CrossFit coach?
We opened the gym in August 2013 and I got my Level 1 in early 2014 so I could begin coaching.
What is something most people don't know about you?
Between my study abroad in college, my career in international business, and a few vacations over the years, I have been to 30 countries and dropped in to CF gyms in 16 of them…many times with zero English spoke. One thing is universal; they are all friendly and excited to have a visitor. Also, I love riding motorcycles (street and off-road) so if I skip the gym there is a good chance I’m in the woods (or being lazy by the pool)!
What do you do for work outside of the gym?
I am Director of Sales for Red Spot Paint.
Family Life
My wife, Julie, and I have two dogs that are our children! Beyond that, you will find my mom at Life and Longevity and my brother (Jeremy) coaching. Much of my immediate family lives within a 45 min radius of Newburgh where we live.
CrossFit Hot Take
CrossFit can be for anyone… but it’s not for everyone. When we start it and fall in love, we want to tell everyone, and it is frustrating when they don’t show the same enthusiasm or don’t want to try it. I’ve learned that it’s ok! Not everyone finds passion in doing really hard things with other people. Thankfully for my physical and mental health, I do love it and am thankful to have found it.
